About shady oaks

I’m Jon Thatcher, owner of Shady Oaks Camping Resort. I grew up in Ticonderoga and returned to the North Country in 2024 with the purchase of the former Shady Oaks RV Park. Restoration work began immediately, guided by a desire to renovate the property and share it with others.

We spent a lot of time rethinking the Camp Store.

What started as one open room is now more defined (before photos are at the end) — with a new wall, a vintage fridge we found in a shed and repainted, a commercial freezer for ice cream and bags of ice, and shelving for merch that feels more in line with the Adirondacks than the old metal retail racks.

In our first year, it felt important to have at least one space that clearly showed where we’re headed — a place people could walk into and understand the direction, even while other areas are still in progress.

We’re not all the way there yet, but this space helps make the vision for Shady Oaks feel real.

As we move closer to the season, things are starting to take shape.

Seasonal campers are making plans, sites are filling, and we’re finalizing how weekend events will fit into the summer.

When I bought the property, a lot of it had gone unmaintained for years.

Over the past season, we cut hundreds of trees (shoutout to Kevin) and cleared piles and piles of brush across the campground. It was a big lift, involving a lot of time, equipment, and consistent effort.

We’re not finished yet, but the progress is real. The property is more open, easier to navigate, and starting to look more like the place we can see in our heads.

And yes — we should have plenty of firewood for this summer.

One of the weekends we’re planning around this summer includes our vintage camper rally, with a car show happening on Saturday.

The camper rally runs all weekend and is designed to feel easy and social — time to enjoy the campground together without a packed schedule.

The car show is on Saturday, giving people a reason to gather, walk around, and spend a few hours enjoying all types of cars. The car show is also a fundraiser for Team Kermit and all proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society's Plattsburgh Relay For Life.
